It may be a little early to start thinking about our next potential tournament, but I've got one idea for a late summer competition and I have heard murmurs of trying to start a team tournament once again. These are my thoughts on how to make them work.
(In case you stop reading, we should pick a night to form a quorum, let everyone be heard on their vision for the red giants and vote.)
LATE SUMMER TOURNY (To steal the original trophy from Nicholas)
Style of the Tournament:
I think this will be a lot more relaxed, and will feel as if it's over a
lot faster. It is meant to be the opposite of what the winter tournament has become.
Timeline:
We hold off starting it until the 27th of July, We have the following 4
weeks set up for tournament games. With saturdays, that becomes 8
nights, but realistically most people aren't going to make it on all of
those nights.
We then have the option of doing the tournament on Wed Aug. 24th or Sat. Aug. 27th
Formatting:
At the beginning of each night everyone's names go into a hat. We then
draw the names, the first person drawn plays the second person drawn in
the first game of the night, the third person plays the fourth person in
the second game, and so on down the line.
If we have an odd number someone is chosen to serve twice, also being drawn from the hat. This would be the last game of the night though and may not be played as our time is always limited in the summer. (We set a time for when the names go into the hat as we only get about 1 hour of good playing time, especially in late August.)
Teammates:
Are also drawn from a hat. This will be random, but to make it so
someone doesn't sit out all night, after the first game the draw is
loaded. (meaning if you sat out your name goes in twice for the next
game. If you sit out two games in a row your name goes
in 3 times. etc.) As a server you will be able to assign your two random
teammates to which positions you want them in.
Rankings:
The more wins you get the better, so showing up is a factor. However
unlike the lady hiscock plus minus isn't the first tie breaking deciding
factor, losses are. (So if you only play 3 games and win all three,
you'll rank higher than someone who's play 5 games
won 3 and lost 2 but has 138 plus minus) Plus Minus will still be the
2nd tie breaking factor though.
Possible Glitches:
Obviously some people will miss quite a few games. That's the only reason this is on 8 nights
instead of just 3-4.
Big question do non-red giants names get to go in the hat as teammates??
We want to encourage people to join, but they're not going to want to
join if we don't let them play... but you can really get screwed over if
their names are in the hat and you're not
a one man team.
WRAP UP
Hopefully 1 full day of Takraw playoffs!!
TEAM TOURNAMENT:
Why it doesn't work:
Attendance is too sporadic, especially over the course of the summer. We also don't have an equal amount of people. It has previously lacked the authoritarian control of the Inventor.
How it could work:
First off every member of the club looks at their schedule and sees if they can commit for a majority of a 6 week schedule. If it's not possible, just show up and play takraw when you want like always.
The 3 most eager Red Giants become the captains of 3 teams.
They compile a team of 3-4 players assessing who will be available attendance wise, who they like playing with, etc.
Over the course of 6 weeks, each teams plays each other 3 times. That is only 6 games/team and 9 games total. (very small in scale compared to what we just finished)
If a team is short a member the captains may trade players so that they have a full team. If the captain can't make it, they assign an assistant captain in their place. (Newbies are always draftable and not set on any team, much like the RG's who have decided not to commit. A draft order is established, I won't bother explaining, but I've got it figured out)
This should really only take 1-2 games per night. And could provide a lot of fun conversation about potential trades.
If this works, and works well we move on to a 4 team format, which would be more entertaining.
